Getting Started with Fantasy Football

If you want some excitement without being on the field, you can play fantasy football.  Fantasy football has become very popular over the past several years.  You can play free or you can play for money, and you can set up fantasy leagues with a few friends or co-workers, or play in big leagues over the Internet.  No matter what type of fantasy football league you play in, you can be assured that it will be a lot of fun.

How To Play Fantasy Football

The first thing you have to do when learning how to play fantasy football is create a league or join a private league.  There are leagues where you can play free fantasy football, and there are ones that cost to join.  Then, you can look at some stats and the players and teams you think will perform well.  When you play fantasy football, the most important aspect is drafting your team.  You will look at the rules of the league you are in, and then draft your fantasy team.  You will pick players at each position and backups from any team that is in the National Football League (NFL).  It is a good idea to pick the best players that are still available, as you should always check the player’s statistics from the previous season before drafting them.  After the draft is over and during the season, there will be opportunities for you to trade players and pick up players to improve your team.  You will then choose the starting lineup that you want for your fantasy football team for every week in the league you play in.  When doing this, you will want to consider the opponents that will match up against your team’s individual players, as that will have an effect on the statistics.  Many fantasy football leagues will have a deadline for choosing your starting team.

You will score points every week by the scoring system that the league you play in uses.  Oftentimes, you will receive points from both offensive and defensive players based on aspects of the game such as touchdowns, receptions, yardage gained rushing, sacks, interceptions, and tackles.  You will accumulate points throughout the season, and the player with the most points at the end of the season will win the league.

What To Look For With Fantasy Football

When learning how to play fantasy football, there are a few things that you should look for.  Before you draft a player, you should look at their stats from the previous year.  Look for players that have a lot of touchdowns, rushing yards, receptions, sacks, and so forth, as those things will increase your chances of accumulating points.  You also should look to see if the player is injury prone.  If they miss a game, or several, you will have to put a backup in, and their statistics will not be as good, which means less chance that you will get points.  The more in depth you look at players, the more knowledgeable you will be about their performance in the next season.

You can look at other things such as the opponents of the player’s team you are looking to draft, the matchups of individual players, if the player is in a contract year (they tend to play better), and how much effect they will have on their team’s offense or defense.  There are so many things that you can look at, but basically you want to choose the players that you think will give you the most points.

Can I Play Fantasy Football For Free?

While many fantasy football leagues have a small fee for joining, there are ways that you can play fantasy football for free.  One great website that has a huge free fantasy football league is at www.yahoo.com.  Yahoo has a huge fantasy football league, and it is all free.  A couple of other sites that you can play free fantasy football are www.cbs.com and www.fleaflicker.com.  Another way to play fantasy football for free is to set up a league with people you know.  You can set up a league for friends or co-workers, establish rules, and then have a draft.  If you take this route, it is vital that you come up with a set of rules before the draft, so there is no confusion.  There are some websites, such as www.NFL.com and www.CBSsportsline.com, that will let you create your own fantasy football league, and then they will help you manage the rules and scoring of the league for a small fee.

What Features Should I Look For When Paying For Fantasy Football?

If you decide not to play free fantasy football, but pay for a league, there are a few things you should look for.  You should find out how many players you will be competing against in the league, as the more players in the league, the more difficult it will be for you to win.  Check out the prizes and prize money for the league, and see if it is on par with the money you are shelling out.  If the prizes and money from winning the league are small compared to what you are paying to be in the league, you should find another fantasy football league.

Where Can I Find Information Online About Fantasy Football?

Once you know how to play fantasy football, it is simple to find information online.  When you want to find a league to play in, simply type in the league you want to play in, and you will discover all that is out there.  If you want to play free fantasy football, type that in and you can find free leagues.  As stated before, it is important that you check out players’ stats before you draft your team.  A couple of sites where you can check out in-depth player stats are www.espn.com and www.nfl.com.  There are others, but these two give a ton of stats.
